A 30-year-old mother of five who admitted that she wed a woman being still married to a man, has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Also the woman was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid community service. Suzanne Mitchell has become the first to be sentenced for such kind of bigamy since December 2005 when homosexual marriages became legal in UK.
The woman, who is now pregnant with the sixth child said she did not know she was breaking the law, but the judge refused to acknowledge this claim valid. What is more, he said that Suzanne decieved her new wife as she did not let her partner know she was married.
The women met each other at a bus station both being pregnant. After childbirth relationships between women became so intimate that in December 2005 the women began living together in the house of Mitchell's parents.
In February 2006 the women decided to become a family and married. At registry-office ceremony Mitchell said she was single.
After some time relationships between women became worse and Mitchell turned back to her husband Charles.
In defence of Mitchell the attorney said that Mitchell had «limited intellegence» that lead to such naive behavior.
According to Civil Partnerships Act same-sex couples have the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual married couples. Thus this case is the first breach of this law.
16000 same sex couples have got married since the Civil Partnerships Act was adopted in 2005. |
